InterAction of Bath's Safety Cases: Underwater escape training module

When helicopters ditch over water, immediate demands are placed on the pilot and passengers to evacuate rapidly, according to pre-determined procedures

InterAction recently completed an intensive military safety case for the design of an underwater escape training module used to train pilots in the actions necessary to escape from their submerging aircraft.

The module closely mimics the interior of a specific model of helicopter, as well as its underwater dynamics.   Worldwide only three such facilities exist and we are particularly pleased to have contributed to the fourth.

Usually safety cases are able to draw on safety-related experience with similar equipment.  In this case there were few precedents, so much of our risk quantification proceeded by the expert judgement of pilots and training instructors, rather than by historical records of incidents.

The safety case has now been signed off and the training module has been successfully commissioned.

The UETM has a simpler cockpit than this one!
